Kitchen display (KDS)

Kitchen display system that's part of your POS

EvronDesk's kitchen display system (KDS) replaces paper tickets with screens that show every order the moment it's placed, routed to the right station, with timers that tell you which table is waiting too long.

Short answer

A kitchen display system shows orders on a screen instead of paper. In EvronDesk it's built into the POS, so orders from the register, handhelds, QR tables, your website and delivery apps all appear on the same screen, sorted by time and routed to the right station.

What changes when you swap paper for screens

Paper tickets get lost, splashed and stuck to the wrong rail. Handwriting gets misread. Nobody knows how long table 12 has been waiting until someone at table 12 asks. A KDS fixes all three: tickets can't fall on the floor, they're always legible, and every one has a timer.

The bigger win is everything that used to be a shout across the pass. Servers see when food is ready on their own screen. Expo sees which parts of a table's order are done and which are still on the grill. And the owner gets real numbers on ticket times instead of a hunch that Saturdays are slow.

Station routing

Every menu item has a station: kitchen, grill, fryer, bar, pastry or any you add. When an order comes in, each station only sees its own items. The bar gets the drinks the second they're ordered, the grill gets the burgers, and the fryer gets the fries, all from one ticket.

Use the All stations view on a single screen in a small kitchen, or put a screen at each station in a bigger one. Switch the expo screen to Expo mode to see whole tickets with each station's progress.

Timers and colour alerts

Each ticket counts up from the moment it was sent and changes colour as it ages. The red one is the one to chase, and you can see it from across the kitchen.

Bump, recall and hold-and-fire

  • Bump a ticket when it's done with a tap, or with a key on a bump bar.
  • Recall the last bumped ticket if it went too early.
  • Hold and fire by course: starters go straight away, mains wait until the server fires them from the register or handheld.
  • Rush flags push a ticket to the top and mark it clearly.

Every channel on one screen

Dine-in, takeaway, your own online orders, QR table orders, kiosk orders, and orders from delivery apps, Shopify or WooCommerce all arrive on the same screen with a clear label. The kitchen works one queue instead of juggling a tablet per app. See delivery management for how that works.

What you learn from the KDS

Because every ticket is timed, EvronDesk reports ticket times and prep times, so you can see which hours and which dishes slow the line. That's the data you need to rework a menu, add a cook on Friday, or move the fryer. More on that in reports.

Tip from the floor

Mount kitchen screens at eye level and at least a metre from fryers and grills. A cheap tablet in a sealed case often outlasts an expensive one left on a shelf above the flat-top.

Frequently asked questions

What is a kitchen display system?

A kitchen display system (KDS) is a screen in the kitchen that shows orders from the POS instead of printed tickets. Cooks see what to make, mark items as done, and the system tracks how long each order takes.

Do I need special hardware for a KDS?

No. Any tablet, monitor with a mini PC, or touchscreen that runs a modern browser works. Wall-mount it away from heat and grease. A USB or Bluetooth keypad can act as a bump bar: keys 1–9 bump tickets, E opens expo and R recalls the last ticket.

Can I still print kitchen tickets?

Yes. You can print tickets as a backup alongside the screens, or use printers only at some stations. Many kitchens keep a printer at the bar and screens on the line.

Does the KDS cost extra?

No. The kitchen display is included in every EvronDesk plan. Each kitchen screen counts as one device on your plan.
